Porcelain Crowns

Restore Your Smile’s Strength and Beauty
If you have a tooth that is significantly damaged or decayed, a porcelain crown can restore your tooth’s shape, function, appearance, and strength.

A porcelain crown fully encases a tooth that’s decayed, cracked, broken, or weakened. They can also be used to repair an expired crown or filling, bond a dental bridge, protect a tooth that’s had a root canal treatment, or complete a single-tooth dental implant restoration.

Porcelain crowns are made of durable, translucent dental porcelain that closely resembles the color, texture, and sheen of natural teeth. Along with creating the most natural-looking tooth restoration, porcelain crowns are designed to fit comfortably with your overall bite and are an excellent choice for those with a metal sensitivity or allergy.

Porcelain crowns are carefully designed to match your other teeth and restore the beauty of your smile.

Porcelain Crown Placement
Porcelain crown placement usually takes place over two visits. During the first visit, Dr. Harris will use a local anesthetic to numb the treatment area before removing some of your tooth structure to make room for your porcelain crown. Once your tooth has been prepared, your hygienist will take precise impressions or your teeth, which will be used by a specialized dental laboratory to craft a crown that fits your smile’s aesthetics and shape. In the meantime, you’ll be fitted with a temporary crown, which will seal and protect your tooth until your permanent crown is ready.

During the second visit, Dr. Harris will remove the temporary crown and ensure the prepared tooth is clean. Once refinements have been made to your crown’s feeling and fit, Dr. Harris will securely bond your porcelain crown to your tooth using a durable dental cement.

How do I take care of my porcelain crown?
Your porcelain crown will require no more than what is ideally needed to maintain your natural teeth. Alongside daily brushing and flossing and routine dental visits, you’ll get the greatest longevity out of your dental crown (and natural teeth) by eating a healthy diet, abstaining from smoking and tobacco, reducing sugar, and refraining from chewing on ice, pen caps, or other objects that aren’t food. With proper care and maintenance, your porcelain crown can last 15 years or longer.

Same-Day Crowns

Same day crowns are exactly what they sound like. In just one visit, Dr. Harris will prepare your tooth, take digital impressions, and mill your custom crown right in our office. Without the need for temporary crowns or gooey impressions, you’ll leave your appointment with a smile that’s fully functional, beautiful, and healthy.

How are same day crowns made?
Also known as a single visit crown, a same day crown is designed and milled using an advanced dental technology known as CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics).

CEREC is equipped with CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing), which is used to safely and painlessly create precise digital images of your mouth and teeth. From these advanced images, CEREC mills your custom crown from a solid ceramic block. Dr. Harris adds the finishing touches, then securely bonds your crown in place. The entire process can take as little as two hours from start to finish.

Advantages of Same Day Crowns

  • Efficiency. Same day crowns can save you valuable time and energy. Because they’re completed in a single visit, same day crowns mean one less trip to the dentist’s office and no wait time in between.
  • Comfort. Thanks to digital impressions, same day crowns spare you the discomfort of gooey impressions. Additionally, same day crowns don’t require temporary crowns, which tend to cause tooth sensitivity and make it difficult to chew normally while you’re waiting for your permanent crown to be made.
  • Durability. With proper care and maintenance, like routine dental visits and daily brushing and flossing, same day crowns can last 10 to 15 years, if not longer.
  • Beauty. With CAD/CAM technology, Dr. Harris precisely matches the shape, shade, and sheen of your natural tooth for a healthy and beautiful smile that is truly all yours.
